The L Word Generation Q Episode 309 Recap: Silence Before the Firestorm (2023)

Hello and welcome to the ninth episode of the third season ofThe L Word: Generation Q, brought to you by the same network that brought you the originalL-Wort, a show about how it's not a woman's job to be eaten and mugged and spat out for a man to develop!!!!!

Today's recap of Generation Q Episode 309, "Quiet Before the Storm," is dedicated to who Steve is in charge of making the trail mixes at Whole Foods. I applaud your work, it has really helped me a lot. Also, Quiet Before the Storm marked Kate Moennig's directorial debut, the return of Bette and Tina to the field, and IMO the strongest episode of the season! It felt coherent and well constructed, and there was so much funny dialogue that I couldn't even transcribe them all.

I would like to start by saying that while I enjoyed this episode overall, I filed the first 30 seconds of it with the FCC, Lambda Legal, FDA, HRC, ADA, AMA, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, my own mother, Amnesty International , the YMCA and every Democratic representative elected to the House of Representatives over the past 75 years to let the world know that a crime against humanity has been committed and must be fought. I can't say for sure what the aftermath will be, but I'm confident it will be quick and bad.

My friends, the show begins in the corridors of a well-lit but quiet hospital. There are doctor talks. There's a statement about falling heart rates, there's a picture of a screen showing blood pressure readings. There are words like "stabilizing" and "CC" that we all recognize as exactly what this scene ends up being...an episode of GREY'S ANATOMY.

"See, she's not dead," Carrie says in the voiceover as the camera pans back to show her and Misty alive and well on the couch, enjoying a little Shondaland.

Finley arrives, looking cute and sporty in her fake hat and bags of luxury takeaways, and immediately expresses her concern that Carrie and Misty didn't start their day with a balanced breakfast and a little "exercise," according to The Doctor. At first I thought it meant "bowel movement," so it was a bit of a journey for me.

"I believeGreys Anatomyreally healing, you know,” says Carrie. "It got me through some really difficult times in my life." This is an incredibly accurate lesbian representation.

Elsewhere in "Film/Television as Therapy" we find Angie huddled under a blanket hiding from the world and also her introduction to the creative writing class watchingThe four-faced liar.When Bella tells her she needs to get out of this and go to class, Angie says she doesn't care if she fails. Also, she's scared of tonight's reading and doesn't want Bella to come and see it. that is literalexactlywhy you shouldn't date your teacher

Bella:"You're too hot to mess with a wannabe Hemingway."
Angela:"I hope to share that perspective one day."

But then... SURPRISE! Bette and Tina travel through the blustery middle of this spoiled country and end up in Los Angeles just in time for Angie's reading!

Bette and Tina are feisty, affectionate and genuinely lovable.

Tine:"You don't need to be nervous honey, you're a great writer!"
complete:"You're so good on the stage that you were great in your high school productions."
Angela:"I was a stagehand."
complete:"And it was unforgettable!"

While Bette collects Kleenex balls from Angie's bed to dispose of in a cardboard box, Tina kindly suggests Angie take a shower. We all know the Sisterhood is Powerful t-shirt has been through some tough times.

"Um, iconic understatement," Bella murmurs as Bette and Tina leave.

Then we fly through the clear blue sky and into the bedroom window of Shane McCutcheon, stretched out naked on the bed. She turns to see Tess attempting an early morning Irish goodbye. Shane says it was so nice having Tess around and the dog missed her and maybe they could talk to a couples therapist when Tess is up for it?

Despite the general belief not only of Tess, but of the entire lesbian population (2004-2023) that Shane is in dire need of therapy, Tess declines the offer to enroll in couples therapy.

"I think that would be a good idea," says Shane.

"Well, you also thought it would be a good idea to have sex with another woman..." says Tess.

On a point of order, I don't think Shane ever said he thought he was oneGood ideafuck another woman.

Tess then announces her intention to visit "the sprawl" to see "the tile guy". OK

Cut to the sentenceDie Alocé-Show, where Alice shows Sophie pictures of Piddles Junior, which doesn't feel like her first time, and both are ecstatic about tonight's season finale and its very special guest, Rachel Maddow!

But then Sophie receives a series of notifications on her phone - Alice's little fight with Taylor at the cinema has gone viral thanks to the notable "tiny nitwit of a manJames Corden (for whom, you may recall, Alice expressed hatred before) and the hashtag he invented for his antics: #AliceSoEntitled. This, of course, inspired the internet to do its job and dig up Alice's sins from the Year of Our Lord 2008.

Sophie looks up from the phone, "Alice, do you know a guy named Darryl Brewer?"

Those craving some fresh air will be happy to know that our next stop is the wild canyons of Los Angeles, where Finley takes Carrie and Misty on a hike.

Misty suggests sex as a reward for climbing that little incline, but Carrie hesitates - she didn't expect to feel all those feelings from Misty! Misty didn't expect to feel all these feelings with Carrie!

"I mean, I'm not one to just jump into the sex stuff," adds Carrie. Misty says she totally gets it, they don't have to do anything she's not willing to do, but she also wants Carrie to know that she's really good at sex.

back inDie Alocé-Show, Alice is on the phone with Barry and things aren't going so well.

Argument #14: I'm sorry you feel this way

Satisfied:Alice remembers meeting Darryl and reporting him, but doesn't regret her decision to put him on the phone. (I'll explain this situation in detail shortly for those who don't remember or haven't seen the original series!) Sophie, giving reasons amidst Alice's chaos, assures Barry that Alice is sorry, will definitely say so, and it there is no need to cancel tonight's show!

Cut to Dani's Castle in the Sky where Dre is writing a song because they are songwriters and Dani is looking at her phone and probably Googling "what happened to Devon Sawa" or "Sepideh Moafi Generation Q Season 3".

Dani leans into the smooch and for a hot second I thought we were all like a community about to witness lesbian sex on TV. But unfortunately! Dre jumps in with a "God I love you" and Dani immediately pulls away.

Before Dani has to deal with the love unfolding before her, Sophie calls and answers like a scared beaver.

Then we return to the filthy corridors of the University of California for a surprisingly well-attended student reading in a massive venue. Angie tells Bella she's nervous about her parents "finding out" about her affair with Hendrix Fitz, but Bella reassures her that everything is fine.

"You're the best person I know," Bella tells her, playing with the sleeves of Angie's blazer. “You are smart and kind and full of life and wisdom. He's an idiot and you're a catch. It's so obvious.

"Who said that?" asks Angie.

And in that moment it is clear: Bella. It's Bella who says who. From all the zombie makeup and sex advice, and the homoerotic experience of having Angelica Porter-Kennard retrieve a condom from her birth canal, a spark has formed in Bella's stomach: she clearly has a crush on Angie.

In case Bella has concerns about the wealth that a lesbian lifestyle offers, Bette and Tina beckon Bella to join them in the auditorium.

We return to the offices ofDie Alocé-Show, where Sophie brought in professional fixer Dani Nunez, because if you can explain the opioid crisis to someone who has just lost their child to an overdose, you can tell Alice from a basketball player on the now-defunct website Our Chart Dot Com in 2008 do.

An update: In 2008, Alice was invited to and attended a secret gay party with her friend Tasha Williams, who was under investigation by the military at the time for homosexual conduct. The party was designed as a safe place for wealthy, closed-minded people, and all attendees were required to sign an NDA and leave their devices at the door. Barry, the host of the party (This show only knows about five male names), Alice also personally asked for discretion after he implausibly declared himself a fan of her cocoon. Alice was excited about the possible "famous boxes" she could find at this event.

Tasha noticed the presence of NBA's top point guard Darryl Brewer almost immediately, and Alice used her Samsung flip phone to secretly capture Darryl Brewer dancing with her boyfriend and somehow undetected. Then Alice saw Darryl Brewer on her favorite channel, New News Live, talking shit about John Amaechi, the first NBA basketball player to come out.

So she decided to post a video of him (and everyone behind him at the party) on Our Chart dot-com.

The video went viral, Alice was interviewed on her favorite channel, New News Live, and her fame at the event eventually landed her a guest spotThe look, who replaced their former gay co-host, who they thought was "pretty angry" (which at the time we assumed was meant to be a nod to Rosie O'Donnell's departureat sight).

But first it got her in hot water with Tasha, who was understandably shocked that Alice would reveal this man, especially while Tasha was under investigation by the army. This man had a family and kids and it's not their fault he's in the closet and they would suffer for it too! It also didn't look good for Tasha to have her very close friend on TV during Tasha's trial.

As a result, Alice and Tasha broke up, although they got back together a few episodes later when Tasha said goodbye to the army.

The fact that Alice had signed a non-disclosure agreement and was no doubt having issues with her supposed boyfriend Barry and Hollywood was shutting down (which was "most of it" at the time) was never addressed.

Ah, then as now - Alice would rather bow.

Alice:"If people really think I'm an out-of-touch idiot, then I say we should make the best of it."
Daniel:"I'm afraid that would make things worse."
Alice:"Kimmel would do that. Sophie, you know he would!
Sofia:"Yes but! Kimmel is not a queer woman.

Alice isn't being disrespectful to these two women, but they don't know what it was like to be gay back when men could come on TV and people could call f*ggots! As someone who was gay at the time and watched and recaps this show, I can testify that Alice's decision made me feel incredibly bad at the time too!

Alice insists that she doesn't regret what she said and therefore doesn't feel the need to apologize. For a moment I thought the show would really address and acknowledge race as a concept - how it affects your perception of yourself as the most oppressed part on this outing and also in this conversation - but instead they just don't!

Sophie understands that Alice wants this, but they're still the only fags on TV, so they have to apologize. All right, says Alice. Well she will apologize!!!!!
