Night vs. be quiet!

Hello everyone, Will here. Today I bring you a review of the Noctua NH-D15 SE-AM4 cooler. In this test I also compare this CPU cooler with the be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 CPU coolers so we can see how they compare. This review grew out of a "challenge" I posed to Noctua on Twitter (see screenshots of the conversation below) to which they confidently responded and basically accepted my challenge. So here it is a few weeks later (I've moved, so the test was delayed a bit) and we finally have the results. So without further ado, let's take a look at how the two coolers compare.

First, let's get some details out of the way. First, Noctua's NH-D15 SE-AM4 cooler. This is what Noctua calls a "Special Special Edition" for the AM4 platform to support Ryzen processors and features the SecuFirm2 mounting system. The cooler comes with two 140mm NF-A15 PWM fans and is a dual tower cooler. The cooler features six heatpipes and a stack of 150mm heatpipes, which are made of copper and a copper base. The NH-D15's heatpipes are spaced farther apart than the NH-D14's, allowing for more even heat distribution from the larger surface area, which should allow for greater efficiency. The NH-D15 boasts exceptional RAM compatibility thanks to its design and recessed bottom fins that allow for up to 64mm of headroom in single-fan mode. In dual-fan mode, Noctua recommends standard RAM heights of up to 32mm. The cooler has PWM support and a low-noise adapter that can reduce the maximum fan speed from 1500 to 1200 rpm to reduce acoustics. Finally, the cooler comes with Noctua's NT-H1 thermal compound, which has proven to be one of the best, if not the best, thermal compound on the market.

When installing this cooler I initially had a RAM release issue with my G.Skillz TridentZ memory modules, so much so that even lifting the front fan as recommended by Noctua failed to close the side panel. So in the first test, the NH-D15 was in single-fan mode versus the Dark Rock Pro 4 in dual-fan mode. However, after the test I questioned my setup and considered whether I could place the front fan on the back of the cooler. After evaluating the space and setup, I was able to add a fan between the two towers and another on the rear tower with plenty of clearance around and retest.

The Noctua NH-D15 was relatively easy to install in the case without having to remove the mainboard. The hardest part of the installation was attaching the fan brackets to the sides of the towers next to the case fans. It was very tight in this microATX case. The NH-D15 essentially met the Vega 64 but had good clearance at the top of the case. Compared to the Dark Rock Pro 4, the Noctua cooler was a bit easier to install.

Stay calm!

Noctua NH-D15 SE-AM4 vs. Silence! Dark Rock Pro 4 CPU-Köler - Computer - 2023 (14)

Stay calm! The Dark Rock Pro 4 is similar to the NH-D15 in size and specs. The Dark Rock Pro 4 comes with two of the SilentWings 3 fans, one of which is 120mm and can reach up to 1500RPM, and a 135mm fan that can reach 1200RPM. This is a dual-tower cooler with seven copper heatpipes on an aluminum base. See my Dark Rock Pro 4 article for more Silence specs! Dark Rock Professional 4.

test system

The test system for this comparison is my tried and tested Ryzen 5 2600 system. The Ryzen 5 2600 is overclocked to 4.0 GHz at 1.4 volts. The RAM in the system is the G.Skillz TridentZ 16 GB RAM kit clocked at 3200 MHz in a dual channel configuration (2 x 8 GB). The PowerColor Red Devil Vega 64 in OC mode is used as the graphics card. The system is housed in the Fractal Design Meshify C Mini Dark TG case with 4x120 mm case fans; three inlets and one rear outlet. The system is powered by the 650 watt power supply Corsair CX650M.

the Test Method

I selected four test sets for testing. I initially tested the coolers in 10 consecutive runs. This was followed by the Intel Burn test at maximum settings and 30 minutes. This was followed by the Prime95 stress test with small EFTs for an hour. I finally playedfourteen dayson maximum settings for two hours during a typical gaming session. I recorded all the minimum and maximum temperatures reported by Hardware Monitor. All tests were conducted at an ambient temperature of 21.6 degrees Celsius (71 degrees Fahrenheit). All test temperatures are recorded in degrees Celsius.

Results

So now let's look at the results. The first is the Cinebench test with 10 consecutive runs. The Noctua NH-D15 outperformed the Dark Rock Pro 4 by 1 degree Celsius when it only reached 60 degrees, while the Dark Rock Pro 4 reached 61 degrees. That's a bit of a wash, and it's negligible in terms of performance. Next came the Intel Burn Test and I started seeing significant temperature differences here. While the Dark Rock Pro 4 reached 71 degrees, the NH-D15 only reached 68 degrees; an improvement of 4.2%. Prime95 saw the Dark Rock Pro 4 hit 71 degrees again, and again the NH-D15 surpassed it with a maximum of 70 degrees. Finally a two hour game sessionfourteen daysAt maximum settings, the Dark Rock Pro 4 reached 67 degrees, while the Noctua NH-D15 was 5.9% cooler at 63 degrees. In my testing, the Noctua NH-D15 was always able to recover better and maintain a lower minimum temperature than the Dark Rock Pro 4. Note that the Dark Rock Pro 4 started with a minimum temperature of 35 degrees, while the Noctua NH-D15 started at 33 degrees. At the beginning of each test it was always 1-2 degrees warming. I also ran single fan configuration tests with the Noctua NH-D15 and as you can see from the attached graphs it was able to keep up with Dark Rock Pro 4 and stay on par. Really impressive results.

Acoustic

Each cooler's acoustics were very quiet, which is a big reason to buy these coolers; performance and less noise. Both the Dark Rock Pro 4 and the Noctua NH-D15 are comparable to or quieter than a standard 120mm AIO liquid cooler like the Corsair H60 liquid cooler. While I didn't compare the water cooler in this comparison, I have had experience with the Corsair H60 and both are quieter than the pump the H60 uses. Finally, the Dark Rock Pro 4 is quieter than the NH-D15 in dual-fan mode. With the NH-D15, I noticed an annoying hum/hum as I had to do the double "pull" adjustment to compensate for the amount of RAM I had. However, the NH-D15 was inaudible on the single fan setting in the "Push" setting and was similar to the Dark Rock Pro 4. After researching online I found other people having similar issues with the hum/groan and most says, that this only occurs in pull configurations.

The "humming/whining" mentioned above

Conclusion and final considerations

So there you have it. The Noctua NH-D15 and silence! Dark Rock Pro 4 cooler comparison. Both coolers are great options for those who don't want to use water cooling for their CPUs. Each costs between $70 and $90 on Amazon and work very closely together. The build quality of each is fantastic, although I have to say that the NH-D15 is a bit more stable and doesn't worry me that much once assembled as there are minimal motherboard failures, while the Dark Rock Pro 4 has a good camber. 7-10mm. The Dark Rock Pro 4 is sleek and all black, which is what a lot of people prefer in their rig, but I really like the color of the Noctua. In general, any cooler is a good choice to cool your processor and provide optimal performance.
