How to conjugate ALLER - TO GO in French - French Truly | We will help you learn a little French! (2023)

As part of my new shorter and easier HOWTO videos, I decided to conjugate all the absolutely crucial French verbs in the present tense completely and clearly for you in 2 steps:

Paso 1: only the verb, the whole verb conjugated with each subject pronoun.

paso 2: the same conjugated verb but this time in a sentence to give it context.

So far we have conjugated avoir, have and être, be (feel free to come back to these more recent videos if necessary)a little review) and this week we conjugate another verb that is almost as important: ALLER = TO GO.

Why is EVERYTHING essential?

Not only is this an important verb that we use all the time, but it's also the base of a future tense called futur proche, which you couldn't conjugate at all without knowing the verb aller in the present tense.

By the way, the future proche is a super easy time. It is a compound tense, which means it contains 2 elements:

Element 1: the verb aller in the present that you will learn or repeat according to your level,

element 2: The infinitive!

As in English, I'm going to eat, I'm going is the verb to go in the present tense, followed by the infinitive to eat. I go - like, je vais - crib. That means, as long as you can conjugate aller in the present tense and have a few infinitives in mind, you know a full future tense! Excellent!

Let's conjugate each of them in the present tense with each individual subject pronoun, and then I'll put it into a short sentence to give you context and more vocabulary at the same time. C'est parti!

let's conjugate EVERYTHING

go = all

This is called the infinitive, l'infinitif, which means that it is not conjugated. Now we conjugate it in the present tense.

I go = I go
I go to yoga once a week = I go to yoga once a week

go = you go(casual)
Do you go there often? = You and are you going sovent?

She goes = She goes
She goes to the university to study chemistry = She goes to the university to study chemistry

will = will
I don't know where it's going = I don't know where it's going

We go= where are you going
We are not going on vacation this year = We are not going on vacation this year*

On is the singular subject pronoun of us. Is it strange to think of us as singular? Think of a unit, think of a country. A country is made up of several people, so it is plural, but you say "my country IS", so it is also singular. On is most commonly used in spoken French, it is the most relaxed way of saying we.

let's go = let's go
We are not going on vacation this year = We are not going on vacation this year*

Nous is the plural subject pronoun of nosotros. It is used less in spoken French than in We have just seen, and it is the most formal and appropriate way of saying "we".

* Just to make sure you understand, the two sentences above mean the exact same thing and it is "We are not going on vacation this year". The only difference is that "on" is more casual and "nous" is "more formal".

Same sentence as the previous one, same meaning, only this time, we, it sounds more formal.

We are not going on vacation this year = We are not going on vacation this year

you go = you go(formal or all of you)
Where are you going? = Where are you going?

you go = you go(for a group of women)
They always go to the movies together = They always go to the movies together

you go = you go(for a male or mixed group)
You go to France every summer = You go to France every summer

One more time!

ALL = TO GO

I go = I go

you go = you go (casual)

she goes = she goes

the goes = goes

on va = let's go (singular + casual)

let's go = let's go (plural + formal)

vous allez = you are going (formal or all of you)

from = from (femenino)

they go = van (masculino o mixto)

Combine knowledge with confidence...

In order for you to have a pleasant and efficient conversation with a French person, one thing is crucial… can you guess what it is? Trust! How well do you think you will communicate in French if you don't feel confident with your accent? When you are afraid that people will not understand you? Or even worse, if you think someone might make fun of you. Without a modicum of trust, there is no room for communication. However, if you feel confident, you can afford to make a few mistakes here and there because people will still understand you. What prevents a conversation is not only a lack of knowledge, but also a lack of self-confidence. You have to have both for it to work, not to mention fun!
