In 1880, the University of Southern California (USC) admitted its first class of 53 students. In the western United States, this private research university is the oldest institution of higher education in its field.

USC offers a major in Interactive Entertainment that includes liberal arts courses as well as courses designed to prepare students for careers in more traditional media, as well as computer and video game design. USC Games offers four degree programs in various areas of game design and development. We offer a degree in Interactive Media at the undergraduate level. We offer a Master of Fine Arts in Interactive Media for postgraduate students.
Depending on your goals and level of preparation, you can choose the program that suits you best. Our degrees are practical in both the use of technology and the development of creative projects. We recommend that those primarily interested in design and production enroll in the interactive media course. Viterbi School of Engineering offers a Bachelor of Computer Science (Games) for those who want to specialize in game technology development.
In addition to our full degree programs, we offer a variety of minors for undergraduates who want to supplement their major with a specialization in one of the many aspects of gaming. Students from all of USC's gaming programs collaborate across all academic areas and fields of study.
Academy of Motion Picture Arts, SCI Building
The Bachelor of Arts in Interactive Entertainment combines a broad liberal arts education with an emphasis on games and interactive entertainment design. A core game design education gives students the opportunity to gain multiple industry expertise, broadening their skill sets and trajectories after graduation. Students create games at all levels of the course, developing practical skills in a range of digital media arts. Teach practical skills to a thriving intellectual community by researching new models of interaction and developing markets and platforms for engaging media. Emphasis is placed on collaboration, team building, innovation and creative leadership.
The MSc is an intensive three-year interactive media program designed to prepare students to be creative thinkers, innovators and thought leaders in the rapidly growing field of games and interactive entertainment. As with the undergraduate degree, MFA students work on hands-on projects and develop their skills in design, development, collaboration, and creative leadership. This culminates in a one-year thesis project. The School of Cinematic Arts' M.F.A.'s strengths in game design, animation, sound production, screenwriting, production, and critical studies are designed to create a vibrant community of practice in cutting-edge digital media.
The design and analysis of interactive entertainment for applications in neuroscience, public health, and medicine are the primary goals of the Master of Fine Arts in Interactive Media (with an emphasis in Games and Health) program. The course is intended for MFA candidates who have been admitted and wish to declare this focus, usually by the end of their second year. In addition to completing focused courses, students must initiate, supervise, and complete a dissertation project in the field.
The Graduate School, in collaboration with the Department of Creative Media, offers an MA in Cinematic Arts with a focus on media arts, games and health. The curriculum builds on the Center's interdisciplinary initiatives that best reflect our vision and mission. Students benefit from the cutting-edge methods, tools, and research that the Center brings together and from the diverse backgrounds represented by faculty, students, and visiting scholars.

The goal of the Bachelor of Computer Science (Games) program is to produce graduates with a solid foundation in computer science and an interdisciplinary understanding of game development. Topics covered include game production, interaction and visual design for games, computer animation, video game programming, game hardware architecture, game engine programming, serious game development, introductory and intermediate game design, and two one-semester final assignments. Master's programs in computer science and game development are also options for program graduates who want to continue their studies.
The aims of the MSc Computer Science (Game Development) program aim to produce graduates with a foundation in computer science, an engineering-focused game development core and a focus on one of the main research areas of serious games, cognition and games, infrastructure or sense of immersion.
game design– Game design is a new and exciting field for media artists working all over the world, in different aspects of the industry and using as many different tools as possible. The Game Design Minor teaches iterative design and prototyping skills while providing students with opportunities to explore design for new technologies, as well as user evaluation and usability testing skills.
game animations– The skills of modern animators, visual effects artists, performance capture professionals and many others are of great value in the games industry when combined with an understanding of how to use these elements in games and systems. The Minor in Game Animation offers an educational pathway that teaches systems thinking as well as the skills and creativity of animators.
game sound– A game audio professional must be proficient not only in one area (for example, explicitly in music composition or recording), but also in other areas of audio, as well as in process and interaction theory. This minor provides a foundation in game design and systems thinking, while also providing theoretical support and skills in audio design and composition, preparing students to design successful audio for the game industry.
toy business– The modern world of media, technology and entertainment is based on new businesses and new ideas. To start a business successfully, new video game entrepreneurs need specific knowledge about the process of building a business, finding investment, and taking a creative project from prototype to finished product. The Game Entrepreneurship Minor offers an educational pathway that teaches creative entrepreneurs hard business thinking.
game user research– Game and interaction design is highly dependent on human-computer interaction and the ability to use research methods to improve the player experience. Game user research is an important aspect of game design and development, which includes managing game testing and usability testing of software, technology, and rules. In addition to the ability to analyze and design optimal player experiences, this field combines the ability to analyze large amounts of data with an understanding of how to build applications that mine user data. themed entertainment– Who designs theme parks, museums, fireworks shows, fountains and parades? Entertainment theme designers do just that. The Video Game Production minor introduces students to a hands-on look at the video game development process, with an emphasis on production and project management. Specialization and communication will prepare students for manufacturing careers and learn to coordinate among specialists. video game programming– Combining two core disciplines (Computer Science and Informatics), students will be exposed to a variety of programming concepts related to video game creation, such as: 3D graphics, artificial intelligence, particle systems, rendering, collision detection, game algorithms, physics Concepts and mathematical formulas. Unlike the video game design minor, which focuses on applying design concepts and using software design tools, students in the video game programming minor evaluate, write, and debug code in addition to building a game engine in the minor.
3D modeling and computer graphics– The 3D Computer Graphics and Modeling minor combines theoretical concepts with cutting-edge techniques to prepare students to apply 3D computer graphics to a wide range of industry applications. Hands-on courses build on a core foundation of advanced cutting-edge techniques, which are used in practical applications and ultimately result in a portfolio of work commensurate with the needs of the 3D industry.
computer science– The Computer Science Minor introduces the concepts, tools and techniques involved in computer programming. This minor prepares students to master many current programming languages.
